LISTEN ON SPOTIFY: Best of 2011: Michael Marotta's Picks | All Boston Phoenix Top Tracks of 2011

There's enough reflection of the cultural significance of 2011's Year in Music in the print edition of the Boston Phoenix, so here's my ramblings on some personal favorites. This list is really the Top 3 – then everyone else: I remember exactly where I was and who I was with when I first heard the breathtaking, instant-Song of the Decade contender "Midnight City" by M83 (driving to Newport Folk, quietly losing my shit to the sax solo); I can think of a few dozen instances of me and friends trying to mimic Robyn's arm-twirling dance from the "Call Your Girlfriend" video, and I knew the Naked And Famous' gloriously pomp synths would be in my Top 3 way back in February. Cold Cave, People At Parties, the Good Natured, and Craft Spells dominated my year, but every December there's a record I get super into too late to include in Best Ofs (last year it was the National's High Violet). Right now, that record is the noisy basement shoegaze of Belong's Common Era. This list might be different had I heard it before yesterday.
