A field guide to Boston's 'lasting' treasures — to be enjoyed before they're razed in favor of chain stores

Chez Vous Roller Rink (Dorchester)
After more than 75 years in business, Chez Vous Rollerway in Dorchester was nearly forced to dim the strobe lights for good this month. But thanks to assistance from Mayor Tom Menino, various local unions, and the Boston Water and Sewer Commission, owners were able to install a mandated $170,000 sprinkler system before an imposed November 14 deadline. If this seems like an unlikely glad story in a time when skate rinks and bowling alleys are closing faster than Republican mouths, that's because it is. While rolling might have gone the way of hula hoops since those damn video games took over, the dedicated bunch of kids and adults who religiously skate at Chez Vous threw enough support behind long-time operator Greer Toney to ensure continued happy gliding. So lace 'em while you got 'em, because there's no telling what pricey code conformity might next fall upon this Blue Hill Avenue Mecca. And don't forget: while the family atmosphere and tight security virtually guarantee your safe visit, passing gas and crop dusting the rink at mach speeds still warrants a harsh ejection from the premises.
