Prom Night
The original
Prom Night
(1980) wasn’t all that original. It featured a young Jamie Lee Curtis as the object of a deranged killer’s desire — something she had done before and better in
Halloween
(1978). But it sure looks good compared to Nelson McCormick’s remake. The cast of comely young victims is generic, and the killer (Johnathon Schaech), an obsessed teacher, is about as menacing as Adam Sandler in any screwball comedy he’s done to date. Playing the imperiled Donna Keppel, who lost her family to the bad guy (he went to jail and has escaped), Brittany Snow gets the scared-witless-but-resourceful-heroine bit down. But McCormick’s bogus bag of spook tricks and trumped-up overuse of ominous music wilt the corsage on the cheap rented tux that is
Prom Night
. Add to that a PG-13 tag and you have virtually no blood. Imagine that, a bloodless slasher flick.
