From death metal to ambient opera
By CHRIS CONTI | February 4, 2009
Mellow out and rest up on the folk front THURSDAY (the 5th) when Maryland-based singer SUSAN SOUZA visits the Greenwich Hotel (401.884.4200) while on a national tour, and local trio THE WIPPETS bring the strings to Nick-a-Nee's (401.861.7290). Both shows are free. Another Thursday gig is at the Blackstone in the Bucket with Woonsocket newcomers GARDEN STREET and Kingston-based JEFF BYRD & DIRTY FINCH appearing with THE DREADFUL YAWNS outta Cleveland. Head back there FRIDAY (the 6th) for a lo-dough show starring SIX STAR GENERAL (their latest disc is a stoner delight) and THE JESSE MINUTE, along with THE DOWN & OUTS and COMA COMA. Also on Friday, local vets VITAL REMAINS — celebrating their 20th year in the death metal business — open for scary-ass legends DEICIDE. ADRIFT and ORDER OF ENNEAD round out the early show; call 401.709.3923. SASQUATCH & THE SICK-A-BILLYS will tear up the Century Lounge (401.751.2255) with JOHNNY CARLEVALE & THE ROLLIN' PINS. We're hoping we can catch THE LOW ANTHEM show at Firehouse No. 13, then hustle to AS220 (401.831.9327) to see headliners MADE IN MEXICO, with HI RED CENTER and SEASICK. The indie/alt-rock show of the week is at South Kingstown High School at 6:30 pm with FEEL THE WATER RISE and CITY CONFESSIONS, followed by heavyweights VERBANA DARVELL, PENROSE, and THE COMING WEAK, all for only $7 at the door. Cats will host a pair of benefit shows, with FINAL HOUR and DEATH BY FAME on Friday, and PHI, DOCTRINE, and RHYTHMAFIA lend a helping hand on SATURDAY (the 7th). Call 401.722.0150. Some goodwill going down at Lupo's (401.331.5876) with a benefit show starring veteran rap-rock locals MASTAMINDZ, with Tennessee-bred lyricist HAYSTACK, Q-STRANGE, and ILLE.GAL starting at 6 pm. Also on Saturday, AS220 hosts the tour kickoff show for local noisemongers SHALLOW WATERS and DIAGRAM A, with SUFFERING BASTARDS, HIGH PLAINS THUNDER, and NATIONAL GRID filling the bill. The Ocean Mist (401.782.3740) hosts the straight-up rock of THE BITTER END, teaming with KRIS HANSEN'S LEFT HAND BAND, and Jerky's Bar has local foursome THE ATTIC with North Shore jammers THE BREW and Cumberland's FAIRHAVEN opening (401.621.2244). On TUESDAY (the 10th), if it's "dark ambient electronica-meets-classical opera" you crave, head to AS220 to catch OCEAN BORN MUSE with "voodoo death funk" act RUMRUNNERS. The show is at 10 pm and it's $6 at the door.
