Drawn together

Comic Koffeeklatsch
Boston needs more superheroes. Not because our metropolis is gripped by an unprecedented crime spree, but, says Dave Kender, because our comics are perhaps not muscular enough for their own good.

Indicted Doctors Talk on Abortion Issues
Last week the Massachusetts House passed a bill outlawing abortions after 19 weeks of pregnancy, except when the mother's life or physical or mental health are endangered — contrary to the Supreme Court ruling last year which allowed abortions through the second trimester or about 26 weeks.

Reggae revival

Booming in Boston's underground, Caribbean riddims are about to burst back into the mainstream
The climate is tropical, sweet skunk fills the air, and reggae jams are hitting such lofty decibels that I can't even feel my phone vibrate.

Turkey Terror Tale

Tom Foolery
Violent crime, gang activity, and general thuggery are not recurring themes on the Brookline police blotter. But that civic paradise is plagued by another kind of scourge — one that manifests all three of those crimes in avian form. And it isn't bird flu.

NFL follies

Pro football gets tossed around. Plus, Kirk Snyder goes to the dentist.
Not only was Donte Stallworth officially charged with DUI manslaughter, but another former AFC East star, former Buffalo Bill running back Travis Henry, reached a plea agreement on drug charges.

Death by handgun

A public-health crisis; plus, gay marriage advances
A couple of weeks ago, David S. Bernstein wrote about the growing "state sovereignty" movement backed by anti-government conspiracy theorists and gun-rights extremists, and touted on the syndicated radio show and Web site of deranged agitator Alex Jones.

36. Raffaello Follieri

CARDINAL SINNER
Anne Hathaway’s greaseball ex-boyfriend, who has a face like a Picasso painting, may end up bunking next to Bernie Madoff for money laundering and misappropriating millions in fraudulent investments. Seems to us a guy with a name that slick — and a knack for getting his picture taken with the Pope — should be actually getting away with shit.

41. Warren Jeffs

LATTER DAY TAINT
Jeffs, the creepy leader of the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is a grade-A shitbird — he reportedly described Hurricane Katrina as an answer to his prayers — and so nobody was surprised when he was finally convicted, in 2007, of being an accessory to child rape. (That case also exposed a hideous loophole in the Arizona laws against incest — they only apply to those over 18.) That should’ve been the end of the road, except that according to a recent Salt Lake Tribune story, Jeff’s diaries indicate that he’s retained a hold over his followers from jail. To be continued? We hope not.

74. Darryl McCauley

BURGLAR KING
Daryl, we don’t think your younger half-brother, Dane Cook, is funny, either. But hell, we show our displeasure by simply refusing to buy tickets to his Garden frat-fests. You, on the other hand — having also been Dane’s boss at Burger King before he got famous — went a tad further, embezzling millions from your polarizing, overshadowing little brah. As pathetic as this story is, we feel even sadder for Louis C.K., who has now technically been robbed twice.

70. Boy George

WHIPPING TO BE CLEVER
As if the planet wasn’t scarred enough from those TV-test pattern outfits Boy George wore in the ’80s, London’s oddest duck has now given us a new mental image to try scrubbing out of our brains: that of a washed-up MTV freak kidnapping and chain-whipping a male prostitute.

90. New Kids on the Block

THE TRITE STUFF
Apparently there’s no statute of limitations on the aural felonies that this five-piece popcorn outfit committed in the late ’80s and early ’90s: just when Boston was beginning to enjoy its newfound reputation for grossly over-budget infrastructure projects and whiney baseball fanatics, the New Kids returned to embarrass us once again. Where’s the Click 5 when you need ’em?

Inside the Reich
Those put off by the soft-pedaling of the SS in the movie adaptation of Bernhard Schlink's The Reader might be wary of Jonathan Littell's memoir of fictional war criminal Maximilien Aue.
