Outsiders were in on screen in 2010
4. MARWENCOL
It takes a village to save a mind, and in Jeff Malmberg's documentary, the village is the imaginary World War II–era Belgian town of the title, the creation of outsider artist Mark Hogancamp. Thugs had beaten Hogancamp into a coma and left him without memory, or much else. So to recover, he made a world out of action figures, Barbie dolls, and assorted model kits. This project exercised not only his motor skills but also his imagination. Malmberg uses his own imagination, too, in this brilliant case study of the workings of art and identity.
