Will Ferrell is the macho ranchero with a heart of gold in Matt Piedmont's parody. Faced with his father's rejection, his brother's marriage to a mysterious woman, and drug cartels, Ferrell's half-witted hero stands up to these challenges in the only way he can: with an over-earnest enthusiasm for justice and self-righteousness. It's a spin on the familiar man-child coming-of-age story but with subtitles, grindhouse aesthetics, and references to Spanish novellas and Alejandro Jodorowsky. It may be hard for viewers to walk away spouting Anchorman-esque catchphrases, but the Mexican cinema spoof includes sharp comedic talent from Genesis Rodriguez, Diego Luna, and Gael Garcia Bernal. Casa de mi Padre is an unorthodox entry in the stoner comedy-fauxsploitation genre, but it might feel at home on Ferrell's Funny or Die website. Certainly more enjoyable if you're up to speed with your Spanish slang.
