Notes on Passion Pit and the Serious Geniuses

Passion Pit |
Wow! PASSION PIT, a sample-heavy juggernaut of hip-tossing post-jams for whom our love has attained liberating levels of transparency (they were voted our Best Music Poll’s Best New Local Act of 2008, and one time, we just flat-out called them “sexy”), have been signed to the ever-foxy FRENCHKISS RECORDS and will be dropping their soon-to-be-eagerly-awaited-but-ultimately-leaked-way-too-early Chunk of Change EP on September 16. Hooray, Passion Pit! Haters (whoever you are) can take solace in the fact that the band must play not one but three shows in one month at Piano’s in NYC, where music goes to have its joy painfully extracted and necropsied. . . . TERRITORIES are wrapping up a breakneck tour of the Midwest with an EP-release show at Great Scott with THIS CAR UP, TRADES, and HOT BOX on July 23 to celebrate the release of their debut EP, Dead Wings, on Windowsill Records. They rock this great mix of Ranaldo-sung Sonic Youth, Unwound, and Blonde Redhead that already has us eager for a full-length sampling. The following night at Great Scott, Brookline’s SERIOUS GENIUSES will serenade the chunky-grindy-howly-post-punk-loving masses with their You Can Steal the Riffs, But You Can’t Steal the Talent, a rock debut to be reckoned with. They’ll be joined by MOVERS AND SHAKERS and GET BEN — this’ll be like looking into the future of local rock, or the good part of the recent past of local rock. Whichevs.

- Do over
I tried hard to be born earlier, but it didn't work. As a result, I've had to contend with an irritatingly positioned cultural blind spot (roughly 1976–1986) that currently occupies all that open space once filled with childhood memories.
- Times a' changed
Ever since Dylan plugged in (gasp!), the Newport Folk Festival has preserved a noble tradition of ignoring what folk is supposed to be in favor of defining the stuff for itself.
- Bumpin' crop
This Friday, August 8, our FNX homies have gathered five of Boston’s best rock bands for a spectacular blowout at the Middle East Downstairs.
- Local rock plows ahead
Not every local rocker is hibernating or joining Bang Camaro this winter.
- Bleep the faith
If you were young and had brain space to spare in 1985, those vacant folds were likely soon flooded with the vast audial ephemera of the Nintendo era.
- Born Ruffians | Say It
Over the past half of Warp’s robust 20-year run, the label’s enduring legacy as a vanguard force in electronic music has drifted as its tastes have gone positively eclectic. The mixed-media future folk of Bibio, the experimental soul of Jamie Lidell, the polished post-punk nuts of Maximo Park.
- Bound for greatness
Twenty years ago, Damon and Naomi founded Exact Change, a small publishing house (okay, a small publishing room) specializing in a wide range of near-forgotten texts from the far-flung fringes of Dada, Surrealism, Fluxus, and other outcroppings of the 20th century avant-garde.
- Boston music news: July 25, 2008
If you’re one of the many local rockers terrified of pulling some hype splits on stage for lack of proper health care, first of all: you pussy!
- Anti-Bush league
It’s crucial that we maintain clarity by holding fast to simple truths — like how our president is kind of a dick.
- Poni Hoax
Poni Hoax are, it’s clear, out to crash the increasingly humdrum post-disco party (just with better supplies), so it’s only fair that you crash theirs.
- Alien lanes
By 9 pm last Monday, the Milky Way’s seven lanes were thoroughly stuffed.
