Live at the Big Easy, January 9, 2009
By DAN CLARK | January 14, 2009
With another holiday season over and easily the most significant presidential inauguration in history days away, most folks are probably experiencing celebration fatigue. But that was not in evidence at the Big Easy when local (and beyond) favorites Kino Proby took the stage with old pals Loverless for their annual homecoming gig.
Loverless have been toting their peculiar brand of blues-soaked psych-rock around the Northeast for several years and three albums. Known for thick grooves and high-energy live shows, the Portland-based power trio were in fine form. Their set modulated from smoky, slow-burning numbers like "Long of Tooth" to the pummeling "Out of the Woods" (both off their latest, Nothing Under the Sun, available for free download at their MySpace page, below), proving that a band don't always have to play fast to play heavy. No strangers to sharing the stage with Kino Proby, Loverless got the crowd good and warm on a cold night.
Kino Proby, a tribute band to Russian rock legends Kino, reunited to delight a crowd whose only complaint was that it would be another year before they played again. Their loyal Russian-speaking New England fan base was in full force celebrating not only KP's return to the stage, but also the life and music of original Kino frontman Viktor Tsoy. The show quickly turned into a party as crazed fans boogied down, many relishing the opportunity to sing along to their favorite songs in their native language. Several even took to the stage, dancing wildly.
With one of their members living in Russia most of the year, Kino Proby have once again gone their separate ways, but anticipation for next year's appearance is already building. Visit www.kinoproby.com for videos and free live mp3s and join in the fun.
