TEA AND SYMPATHY ATLANTIC WORKS GALLERY PRESENTS Tea and Sympathy: Provocative New Work in Video, Photos, and Dioramas, by Peter Pizzi Opening Reception: Saturday, October 4th, 6-9 pm In the 1956 film, “Tea and Sympathy,” the unconventional hero, ill-at-ease with the other boy’s talk of girls and sports, is deemed a “sissy.” Taking his cue from the innuendo-laced film, Pizzi has mounted a media play land which touches on themes of sexuality and identity with innocence and/or perversion. Via eight video viewing boxes, “Tea and Sympathy” guests will partake of the voyeuristic thrills of a peep show. Pizzi’s show also includes hands-on erotic puzzles; teasing, doll-sized dioramas; and photography of masked nude models, suggesting both exposure and anonymity. Continuing with the theme, Pizzi has set up an installation in which one can view his latest short film, “Sucker.” Peter Pizzi is a filmmaker, photographer, and installation artist. His short films have screened at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, The Brattle Theatre, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This show may contain works and images that are not suitable for some audiences, discretion advised. Third Thursday Reception: October 16th, 6-9 pm Show Dates: October 4th-25th, 2008 Gallery Hours: Fridays and Saturdays 2– 6pm, and by appointment Contact: Peter Pizzi, 617-347-8539 For detailed directions and other information about Atlantic Works Gallery, please visit www.atlanticworks.org.[more] Tea and Sympathy
BOSTON COMIC CONVENTION Boston Comic Spectacular Returns Sept. 28th with Van Sciver and Anderson BOSTON - The Boston Comic Book, CD/Record & Pop Culture Spectacular is  bringing industry superstar Ethan Van Sciver and legendary artist  Murphy Anderson to its next big show on Sunday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m.  to 5 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel, located at 200 Stuart St. in the 6th  floor Convention Center. A Wizard Top Ten artist, Van Sciver, along with writer Geoff Johns,  revitalized the Green Lantern franchise for DC Comics. Their next  project (Flash Rebirth) aims to do the same for the classic Silver Age  Flash, Barry Allen. Van Sciver began his comic book career by creating the independent  series "Cyberfrog," which eventually lead to his being tapped to work  on "Impulse" for DC Comics. He later illustrated the adventures of  such top characters as Batman, the Justice League of America, and the  X-Men before his meteoric rise to superstardom as part of the creative  team that brought back Hal Jordan as DC Comics' preeminent Green  Lantern. As part of Van Sciver's appearance, the Boston Comic Book Spectacular  is producing a limited edition print which will be distributed to all  paid attendees. The stunning print features Van Sciver's illustration  of Batman confronting one of his fiercest foes, the savage Man-Bat. The legendary Murphy Anderson began his comic book career back in the  industry's Golden Age. For over 50 years, he served as penciller and  inker on some of the most well known comics of all time, including the  character-defining Silver Age adventures of the Flash, Hawkman, the  Atom, the Spectre, Adam Strange, Elongated Man, the Justice League of  America, Superman, and Batman. Virtually the entire canon of heroes at  DC Comics owes much of its stature to the work of Murphy Anderson. Other guests scheduled to appear at the show include Rich Woodall,  David Tata, Don Higgins, Severed Head Productions, Andrew J. LoVuolo  of Graphic Illusions Studios, Scott Hamilton, Richard D. Irving,  Wicked Unscripted, Dark Tale Comics, Jason Casey, Peter Vinton, Sweet  on Geeks, the Secret Identity podcast, and more to be announced soon. Tens of thousands of New England Comic Book fans have enjoyed previous  editions of the popular longtime Boston Comic Book Spectacular which  started in 1975 when the hotel was known as Howard Johnson's 57. It is  Boston's largest comic book convention and the longest-running show of  its kind in the same location in the United States. The show features  over 12,000 square feet and 130 tables of comic books and their  creators, original comic art, and toys, plus a media room with  thousands of collectible CDs and records from rock to rap and hard-to- find feature movies on both DVD and VHS. The Boston Comic Book, CD/Record & Pop Culture Spectacular will be  held Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Boston Radisson Hotel, 200 Stuart St.,  6th floor Convention Center. The comic and toy show will be open to  the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The media room will open at 9:30 a.m. The Boston comic con bargain, admission is just $6 with the discount  coupon which can be found at the show's web site (www.monkeyhouseentertainment.com ) or at many fine comic and collectibles stores throughout New England  (see the web site for a list). ART OPENING - SEPT 4, 2008 Images of Words: A Dialogue From January to September, 2008, sculptor Richard Dorff and painter Lorin Hesse have met weekly for a grand project of discourse through image and word. For 8 months, each, in turn, produced and presented a new piece of artwork weekly. And each, in turn, then responded graphically and orally to the other. An intense iconographic, aesthetic, and verbal dialogue ensued, and it is this combination of languages, marks and remarks, which is the focus of this exhibit. An interest in formal issues relating to space, pattern, and line is evident throughout the series of physical pieces, as is an emphasis on abstraction, metaphor, and personal exposure through self portraiture. Additionally, a focus on emotion, stream of consciousness word association, memory, and abstract idea is evident in the word choices each artist made for the other’s pieces. Both artists' sensibilities are exercised in the innovative installation of the exhibit, which merges both a 2-D and 3-D approach. Traditional gallery values are questioned and viewers are invited to consider the words (whose graphic representations in black and white, are applied directly to the walls) as they would have the works themselves. The works, meanwhile, will be shelved and out of immediate view in a specially designed storage area of the installation. Images of Words: A Dialogue Atlantic Works Gallery 80 Border St., East Boston September 4th through September 27th. Opening: Thursday, Sept. 4th 7-10pm Artist Talk: Thursday, Sept. 18th 6-9pm Gallery Hours: Fri and Sat 2-6pm or by appointment. Contact: 978-395-350 or 617-283-7113 for information or interviews[more] Art Opening - Sept 4, 2008
