Boston's Rap Class of 2011

A slice of area hip-hop's diverse scene — from hardcore boom-bap to frat rap

• "Should I go to college?" asks Moufy. It's a Friday, we're at Starbucks, and we haven't even sat down. I stare blankly at him, unsure of what to answer. After all, the Roxbury native and recent high-school grad did have one hell of a summer. Perhaps he deserves to take a break from academia.

Moufy says the hype and hoopla over tracks like "Miss Newton" "just shows the power of my music." It also shows his potential reach as an artist who bridges gaps between Boston's typical East Coast–centric rap stylings as well as the fast-growing demographic of mostly white suburbanites who have taken major interest in the ever-budding frat-rap scene.

It's not all talk. Moufy attended a mix of private and public schools, bringing him from his native Roxbury housing projects to elegant New Hampshire and Maine boarding schools. As a result, he says that his music is bound to resonate with rap fans of all stripes. Says Moufy, "We just thought, 'Okay — our market is all in one place at one time.' "

When Czech playwright Karel Capek first used the word "robot" nearly a century ago, it was to describe a coldly calculating machine, evil in its perfection and scornful of human frailty. And so began our fascination with the possibility of humanoid machines designed to be our underlings but destined to be our overlords.
