Wanted: a "Colonel Tribune" for Boston's dailies

A confession: I didn't know Colonel Tribune existed until Romenesko pointed me to this Mark Potts blog post.

Now, though, I'm weirdly fascinated by this quasi-historical, absurdist personification of the Chicago Tribune. And I'm wondering: if the Globe and Herald decided to follow suit, what characters would work best?

Suggest away.

For the Globe – Professor GlobeStalker Tweed, Sherlock Holmes hat and magnifying glass in hand, a poor relation of Eustace Tilley, the New Yorker icon with top hat and monocle.

For the Herald – Lunchbucket Fox (a nod to ultimate ownership), Red Sox cap, Five Brothers flannel shirt, and cynical stogie.

Isn't Howie Carr already the Herald's official mascot?

Within living memory -- that is, if you're as old as I am -- Globe editorials used to be signed "Uncle Dudley."

And back in the days when the Transcript (d. 1941) was the city's quality broadsheet it was known as "the maid's paper."

A reader notes that the Herald has long used a running, newspaper-delivering Herald Newsboy--but that it's less prominently featured now than it used to be. Apparently the character is etched in brass (copper?) for posterity in front of the paper's Herald Square HQ. Re: the Globe, this same reader writes:

"The Globe for years used to run a "Globe Man'' logo, of a large fat guy dressed in Dickens[ian] clothes and top hat, with "The Largest Circulation in New England" written on his belly. As the paper grew, his belly would grow. I kid you not."

    Adam -

Why not just "The Phoenix -- bringing old media back from the ashes."

And yes, this really is the Colonel. Thanks for the (digital) ink.

I apologize. I meant to say that "The Phoenix" could be YOUR character.

For the Globe, how about getting ol' Steve Ainsley on Twitter?
