Globe loses books editor to Harvard

Jim Concannon--who'll be news editor in Harvard's public-affairs office--takes a great deal of institutional knowledge with him. Here's the press release from deputy managaing editor of features Doug Most:

--------------------

Those of you who know Jim Concannon know they don't come more selfless. In
every role he's had here, and there have been many, it's always been about
what's best for the Globe. That's why it's so hard to announce that Jim is
leaving us to be the news editor over in Harvard's public affairs office.

Jim has been the Books editor here for the last 7 years, the last step of
many. Before that he was the National editor during much of the Clinton
administration, and he's also worn hats that said Sunday Focus editor,
deputy Foreign editor, Living editor, National editor, and interim Op-ed
editor. As Books editor, he managed the Sunday section, the daily reviews,
the Books site on boston.com, and its blog.

Be sure and wish him well, but know that he's not going far, as my hunch is
that the small college he's joining across the river will still be the
occasional subject of our coverage (just a hunch).

Sendoff plans TBD.

Doug

Lucky Harvard.  Jim has been a rock during the tumult.  Speaking as a Boston Globe freelance book reviewer, I am bereft. Whoever takes over has a tough act to follow.

I'm going to miss Jim very much. As a freelance book reviewer throughout his tenure, he was always encouraging, always helping me to aspire and "write up" to the Globe. You pitch your writing to your market, and you always hope to deliver your best. Jim's kindness, encouragement and open-mindedness created the environment in which that was not only possible, it was natural.

Jim was the epitome of professionalism. I feel like I know him even though we've never met in person. I'll miss working with him.

The Globe's loss is Harvard's gain.

I echo the views of the others. Jim has been a wonderful books editor, always encouraging and generous. As a freelance book critic/contributor with The Globe, I've been proud to work with Jim and have benefitted as a writer and journalist. He'll be missed, but will do a great job over at Harvard . .

I said it to Jim and I'll say it here. He's one of the most stand-up people I've worked with in journalism. And a fine editor to boot.
