Rare Frequencies: What's in a name?

The evocative qualities of a name like the PUTREFIER are about as subtle as a flying hammer, but Mark Durgan’s music is actually nuanced. Honest. Although his recent records are by no means easy-listening classics, they aren’t as fetidly ferocious as you might imagine, owing as much to musique concrète as to Merzbow. Durgan is a 20-year veteran of the UK noise scene who’s collaborated with legendary avant-noiseniks like the New Blockaders. At his show at the Piano Craft Guild this Monday, he’s on a bill with Ohio experimental musician SAM GOLDBERG (who works with organs and guitars, among other instruments), UNEVEN UNIVERSE, and local crackling drone fellows SKELETONS OUT. It could turn out to be a very mellow evening.

A week from Saturday, a very special concert at Brandeis’s Slosberg Music Center will mark the US debut of NETTLE. The brainchild of the amazing DJ /RUPTURE (a/k/a Jace Clayton), Nettle boast Clayton on turntables, synths, and samplers, Moroccan musician ABDELHAK RAHAL on violin and oud, Khalid Bennaji on guembri and bendir and Brent Arnold on cello. The group combine disparate traditions — North African folk, free improvisation, and breakbeats — that reflect its members’ varied backgrounds. There will be a pre-concert talk and improv workshop; check the event Web site for details.

On the bill with Nettle is FILASTINE, a peripatetic percussionist and producer whose phenomenal second full-length, Dirty Bomb, has just been released on /rupture’s Soot label. Filastine’s music is a potent melange of breaks, hip-hop, jungle, dubstep, and political outrage. He’ll also be playing a solo set, the following Monday, at Enormous Room.

Rare Frequencies: Barrage a trois

They say good things come in threes. That’s certainly the case with releases on Boston’s own Intransitive Recordings. Specializing in experimental music, noise, and sound art, the label has released some tremendous CDs over the years by acts like NERVE NET NOISE, BRENDAN MURRAY, and KAPOTTE MUZIEK, pretty much always in groups of three.

This month, label head Howard Stelzer unleashes a new batch of recordings by an international array of experimental music luminaries and cult figures (in law enforcement, no less) from the outer reaches and beyond. After the jump, some MP3s to give you a sense of what’s happening on one of New England’s most adventurous record labels.
