Grind it out: Wormrot in Allston, 04.02.11
Gruesome Singaporean grinders WORMROT were scheduled to play in Somerville last September, but a holdup at U.S. Customs left local fans disgruntled. Luckily, the band are honoring their commitment and making their Boston debut at O’Brien’s Pub this Saturday in Allston.
Stylistically, Wormrot resemble Nasum and Phobia -– on their new LP, the group couples discordant blasting with crusty grooves, deftly avoiding the sterility of some modern grindcore acts and the sloppiness of others. Arch-moneygrubbers Earache Records must have been having a weird day when they signed Wormrot, one of the few active grind acts on their now-anemic roster. In a rare display of generosity, the label is offering Wormrot’s new LP, Dirge, for free download!
Joining Wormrot are Relapse Records’ Tombs, a crushing, ponderous monolith of sound. Tombs hail from New York and combine elements of noise-rock, hardcore, and dirge-like industrial metal, drawing frequent comparisons with Godflesh. Indeed, they’re what Jesu would sound like if Broadrick had stayed pissed. Sandwiched between the deathsters and the grindstars on Saturday’s bill, Tombs will help you slow your roll.
Local death metal delinquents Sexcrement and Abnormality will defend their OBs territory from the out-of-towners with their arsenal of brutal riffs and paeans to the gods of gore. Each purveys a hyper-technical brand of deathgrind with slamming breakdowns and intricate, creative songwriting. Lyrically, Abnormality take the highbrow route while Sexcrement lay on the sleaze -– antics are promised whenever these locals rear their ugly heads. Living Void, a Somerville group featuring members of Revocation and Composted, will round out the festivities; Sexcrement and Living Void were both slated to open the ill-fated Wormrot show back in September, and that’s why Saturday’s lineup just feels so right.
The event is 21+ and only $8, a bargain for a cross-genre showcase.
