BSFC vs. Oscar
So much for the Oscars. I'd just like to add that the
winners were in a sense a vindication, once again, of the film critics
societies that initially brought them to the attention of everybody. Take for
example the organization of which I'm a proud member, the Boston Society of
Film Critics: 8 of the 13 comparable awards (there is no Best Newcomer or
Ensemble Cast in the Academy Awards) given by the BSFC went on to win Oscars.
They include Best Film ("The Hurt Locker"), Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow), Best Supporting
Actor (Christoph Waltz), Best Supporting Actress (Mo'Nique), Best Documentary
("The Cove"), Best Animated Film ("Up"), Best Film Editing ("The Hurt Locker"),
and Best Song ("The Weary Kind" from "Crazy Heart"). These were awarded on Dec. 14, 2009, the first such recognition, I believe, any of these winners received.
Coincidence? Prognostication? Influence? Note that this is not
the first year this has happened.
