The Top 10 Video Games of 2010

Heavy reign

DEATHSPANK: Packing even more punchlines than punches, Hothead’s action RPG was the year’s best bargain.

The most frustrating thing about being a gamer is trying to keep up with the hype train. Every week or two, it seems, we're treated to another round of breathless encomiums for a game that reviewers assure us is the best or, God help us, the most important one ever made. Then we forget all about it when the next big thing comes along. And it happens every time.

As I looked back over the year in games, what struck me wasn't the quality of the offerings that came out — rather, it was how I had forgotten that most of them came out this year! Did you remember that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a 2010 release? God of War III? Mass Effect 2? All were canonized when they appeared, but what's the last time you heard anyone talk about them?

On the other hand, it's clear that top-quality games are now a year-round phenomenon and not just a seasonal blip. Of my top 10 games of the year, three came out before March. If you'd already forgotten that any of them existed, now's your chance to catch up.

  • Review: No More Heroes 2
In the world of video games, one rule is ironclad: if a game is successful, there will be a sequel. Hell, sometimes if a game isn't successful, there will be a sequel.

At its core, Portal 2 is a simple concept. Using a handheld device, you can shoot an orange and a blue portal that will instantly link any two points in space.

It's come to this. As if mandatory system updates and routine software patches weren't enough, console games now support so much peripheral hardware that folks with different set-ups might as well not be playing the same game.
  •   REVIEW: BULLETSTORM  |  March 10, 2011
Bulletstorm represents games at their best: it gives players a complex system of rules to master, doles out rewards and punishments that encourage creative thinking and rigorous analysis, and demands precise execution to translate ideas into actions.
