Blake Boston might be the most adored degenerate on earth. But even without hyperbole, he's one of the Bay State's biggest exports. Ever since a photo of Boston (that's his real name) posing in his kitchen doorway was sucked into the viral whirlwind two years ago, and universally branded by internet users as Scumbag Steve, the Massachusetts native's fur-lined G-Unit parka and signature patterned fitted hat – the latter famously cocked back and to the side – have transcended the underground world of web memes and effectively highjacked the pop culture agenda.

It took all of about 30 seconds after the final seconds of Game 5 ticked off until we got the definitive meme of Celtics/Heat -- and maybe of the 2012 NBA Playoffs. As the Heat entered the tunnel to hit the showers, ESPN's cameras picked up the voice of a young child desperately trying to cheer up LeBron James and D Wade.

There's a jovial shit-mouthed wise-ass standing in an outdoor foyer at MIT, chain-smoking Newports and hitting on every girl who walks by. He's the 22-year-old whiteboy from Massachusetts whose actual birth name is Blake Boston, but who became widely known as Scumbag Steve after a pic of him sporting a backwards hat, gold chain, and fur G-Unit hoodie was poached off the MySpace page for his suburban rap crew – the Beantown Mafia – and re-appropriated as a universal symbol for degeneracy.

On Tuesday, the Occupy Wall Street movement saw its largest resurgence of energy since most encampments were evicted last fall. In New York and worldwide, Occupy activists fueled an international day of action for May Day.

This weekend, ROFLcon comes back to Boston. ROFLcon is an annual Internet meme conference (yes, a meme conference) that started in Boston in 2008.

While one side of the river is either running the marathon, getting drunk and watching the marathon, or stumbling out of Fenway Park after the annual 11am Red Sox game, the other side of the river is enjoying our fakest spring holiday the way nature intended: by starting hyperlocal hashtag memes.
